Crops in Abundance

It's that time of year when we all have a glut of vegetables and fruit!

In collaboration with local Family Centres ( or other charities), we  have set up a surplus box scheme.

Gardeners and allotmenteers often find that some crops grow better than others, depending on the weather and pests etc. Some crops grow so well they have a glut. The freezer is full, friends have all been supplied and yet there is still spare! Rather than throwing on the compost heap why join our a box scheme and donate.

Crops in abundance aims to help set up and help organise collection. We are currently working with Epsom Family Centre. They distribute to families who use their centre. This not only teaches children about vegetables but gives fresh produce to families in need of a helping hand. Grow Cook Enjoy provides a recipe and advice on how to cook the vegetables.

Epsom Common Allotments

A few surplus veg can make all the difference.

Parent’s commented on how being able to access fresh local produce helped them try fruit and veg they hadn’t tried before, they enjoyed the accompanying recipes as provided by Jayne and it helped parents encourage their children to eat fruit and veg because they had chosen what they would like to have and carried it home. Being able to access free fruit and veg helps parents put money towards other things for their children e.g. school uniform or a treat.

We are looking for Allotment tenants to supervise the box on their site and other volunteers to transport to the centres ( you may not garden or have an allotment but have a little free time). We will then join the dots and connect people together.
